Address by Shri Meenesh Shah, Chairman, NDDB during Talk by Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki, Founder of Energy Swaraj Foundation on harmful effect of Climate Change on the planet and possible solutions to mitigate it at NDDB, Anand on 12 December, 2022

It is an honor for all of us that today his yatra has reached NDDB and He is amongst us.

Undoubtedly Global Warming is Global Warning.

The consequent climate change is the defining crisis of times we are living in.

Every corner of the globe is facing the devastating consequences of Climate Change.

Rising temperatures are fueling environmental degradation, natural disasters, weather extremes, food and water insecurity and economic disruption.

We at NDDB are very well aware that how it is impacting country’s milk production too.

We humans have been contributing to raising the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at an ever-increasing rate, not only by burning fossil fuels, but also by cutting down carbon-absorbing forests.

The rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years.

Therefore, it is clear that business as usual is not good enough for mitigating climate change.

It is the time to act and act in a collective manner not only for ourselves but also for our future generations

There are several ways to reduce global warming and one of the best ways is to use an alternative source of energy instead of using fuels that produce more carbon dioxide.

The sun is one such alternative and perennial source of renewable energy.

We are blessed with abundant sunlight in this part of the world.

With advancing technology, solar energy can now be leveraged in various ways, which can diminish our dependency on fossil fuels.

Dr Solanki, You would be happy to know, NDDB is also conscious about it and we have also taken a number to steps in this direction.

  • Usage of solar energy is being done in solarizing the operations of village level dairy cooperative society.
  • We are also encouraging dairy cooperatives for using solar PV systems for DCSs and at other places.
  • Usage of Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) technology too is being propagated in dairies.
  • Solar based thermal storage system is another initiative being propagated by NDDB.
  • NDDB supported farmers of  Mujkuva village and helped them organize in to  India’s first grid connected solar pump irrigators’ cooperative enterprise, wherein farmers affiliated with a collective have installed solar pumps in to their fields.
  • So, these farmers use solar energy for irrigation and export the surplus power to the power distribution company through a micro grid established and managed by them.  This is somewhat similar to Energy Swaraj that Dr Solanki is keenly advocating.
  • NDDB is also emphasizing sustainable practices such as scientific fodder production, feeding, manure management and energy management coupled with GHG removal through Carbon sequestration to achieve the state of ‘Net-Zero GHG emissions’ by 2070.

However, considering the enormity of task at hand, much more needs to be done. The need of the hour is to popularize the installation and use of solar energy in all aspects of life.

It is one thing to have an idea and a totally different thing to put your heart and soul to achieve the idea.

Dr Solanki has undertaken this herculean task to make people climate and energy literate by visiting every nook and corner of the country.

The clean and inexhaustible Solar Energy is the future and I assure you that we at NDDB/Dairy Cooperative fraternity are committed to support your noble mission through our different programmes for farmers/milk producers in rural areas.

Once again, I welcome you and we all look forward to listening your thoughts.
