Research in Molecular Genetics focuses on Molecular
Characterisation of cattle and buffaloes to identify animals with economically important milk production
traits. The Laboratory is involved in DNA fingerprinting
for parentage verification as well as screening of animals
for Genetic Diseases like Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion
Deficiency Syndrome, Citrullinaemia and Deficiency of
Uridine Monophosphate Synthase.
A research project on "Molecular Characterisation and Preservation of Endangered
/Rare Breeds of Cattle and Buffalo of Indian Origin
in the form of Frozen Embryos" is currently being
undertaken by the Laboratory. Endangered indigenous
cattle breeds such as Vechur, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Krishna
Valley as well as the Pandharpuri, Toda and Jaffarabadi
buffalo breeds have been earmarked for preservation
as frozen embryos.
