Milk Production
- India's milk production increased from 21.2 million MT in 1968-69 to 66.2 million MT in 1995-96 and to 121.7 million MT in 2010-11.
- Per capita availability of milk was around 276 grams per day in 2010-11 increased from 195 grams per day in 1995-96, up from 112 grams per day in 1968-69.
- India's milk production increased over 4% annually during 2000-01 to 2010-11 surpasses the 1.6% growth in population; the net increase in availability is around 2.4% per year.
Marketing
- In 2010-11, average daily cooperative milk marketing stood at 219.9 lakh litres; annual growth has averaged about 5.2 per cent compounded over the last decade.
- Dairy Cooperatives now market milk in all metros, major cities and more than 2000 towns/cities.
- During 2001-2011 the daily milk supply by Cooperatives to each 1000 urban consumers has increased from 47.7 to 60 Kg per day.
Innovation
- Bulk-vending - saving money and the environment.
- Milk travels as far as 2,200 kilometers to deficit areas, carried by innovative rail and road milk tankers.
- Automatic Milk Collection Unit (AMCU) and Bulk Milk Cooler (BMC) at grass root level – preserve quality and reduce post-procurement losses.
Macro Impact
- The annual value of India's anticipated milk production amounts to more than Rs.2,075 billion in 2010-11.
- Dairy cooperatives generate employment opportunities for about 15 million farm families.
- Livestock contributes 22.2 per cent to the GDP from agriculture & allied activities.
- About 22.45 million people work in livestock sector, which is around 5.8% of the total work force in the country.
